Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily feeding and watering of various livestock (cattle, goats, sheep, poultry) according to established schedules and dietary requirements.
  • Preparing and mixing feed rations, ensuring appropriate nutritional content for different animal ages and conditions.
  • Monitoring feed intake and water consumption, reporting any significant changes or issues to management.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of feeding areas, pens, and animal enclosures to prevent disease.
  • Assisting with general animal health checks, identifying signs of illness or injury, and reporting to veterinary staff or supervisors.
  • Administering oral medications or supplements as directed by veterinary personnel.
  • Operating and maintaining feeding equipment, ensuring proper functionality and safety.
  • Recording and maintaining accurate daily logs of feeding activities, feed inventory, and animal observations.
  • Assisting with moving and handling livestock safely and humanely.
  • Participating in rotational grazing management where applicable.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in livestock feeding and general animal care.
  • Knowledge of various feed types and nutritional requirements for different livestock species.
  • Ability to identify common signs of illness or distress in farm animals.
  • Strong understanding of animal welfare principles and humane handling techniques.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy for accurate record-keeping.
  • Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili; knowledge of local languages (e.g., Somali) is an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or diploma in Animal Health, Agriculture, or a related field.
  • Experience working with livestock in arid or semi-arid regions.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid for animals.
  • Experience operating farm machinery (e.g., feed mixers, tractors).
  • A valid driving license (motorcycle or tractor) is a plus.
