Assistant Teacher

Caring Hearts Bhd operates Equal Start Learning Centres offering Pre-Primary and Primary education to out-of-school children, giving them a chance to learn, grow, and thrive. We are seeking a compassionate Assistant Teacher to support classroom instruction, engage with students, and help maintain a positive and nurturing learning environment.
The Assistant Teacher plays an active instructional and operational role within the Learning Centre. The Assistant Teacher carries out lessons, small-group sessions, and specific activities as directed by the Class Teacher, and remains accountable to the Class Teacher for instructional quality and classroom conduct.
Working under the guidance of the Class Teacher and Equal Start Education team, the Assistant Teacher supports the effective delivery of the education program and contributes to creating and maintaining a safe, welcoming, structured, and productive learning environment for all students.
The Assistant Teacher is expected to uphold the organization’s mission, professional standards, and safeguarding requirements in all duties.
Key Responsibilities
1. Communication with the Leaders
- Communicate with the Class Teacher the daily status of the classroom and operational matters.
- Communicates concerns or unusual situations promptly to the Class Teacher, Learning Centre Lead, Equal Start Education team or Caring Hearts management.
2. Classroom Operations and Administration
- Arrive at the Learning Centre at least 30 min prior to the start of class each class day.
- Prepare classrooms, teaching materials, devices, and other necessary resources before the start of each class and each new term to ensure the smooth resumption of lessons.
- Take and maintain accurate daily attendance records of all students and volunteers.
- Upload student progress to the web and ensure it is up to date.
- Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to health, safety, security, cleanliness, and maintenance of equipment and premises.
- Comply fully with all child safeguarding requirements, including signing and adhering to the Child Protection Policy.
- Assist the Class Teacher in fee collection when assigned.
3. Academic Instruction and Student Support
- Facilitate daily lessons according to the Equal Start Education program in a caring and conducive way.
- Collaborate with the Class Teacher to group students based on ongoing competency assessments and deliver activities that challenge advanced learners and support those needing remediation to close learning gaps.
- Mark student work in a timely and constructive manner.
- Monitor, record, and track student lesson completion and academic progress.
- Conduct level assessments, with final validation by the Class Teacher.
- Guide and supervise volunteers during classroom activities.
- Maintain positive classroom management and promote respectful student behavior.
- Identify students requiring additional support and communicate observations to the Class Teacher.
4. Upkeep of the Classroom, Materials, and Equipment
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of classrooms and shared spaces.
- Maintain inventory and condition of teaching materials and devices, and report defects promptly.
- Inform the Admin group when school supplies are low in quantity.
- Distribute materials and devices to students.
- Collect, store, and recharge devices at the end of each day.
- Secure equipment, learning materials, supplies, and facilities at the end of each day.
- Conduct periodic checks to ensure devices and equipment are functioning properly and report defects promptly.
5. Parent and Community Engagement
- Represent the Learning Centre professionally in interactions with families and community members.
- Refer significant academic or disciplinary concerns to the Class Teacher and address parent feedback within assigned scope.
6. Professional Development and Team Contribution
- Attend team meetings, and training development sessions as required.
- Participate in training and apply learned skills to classroom practice.
Other Duties
- Assist with the development and creation of program learning materials.
- Support centre-wide initiatives and events.
- Supervise students during field trips or special programs.
- Greeting the parents and students to create a welcoming environment for all.
- Support the Class Teacher in parent communication and visits when assigned.
- Undertake additional responsibilities reasonably assigned by the Learning Centre Lead.
The above responsibilities are not exhaustive and may be amended from time to time to meet the operational needs that are reasonable as an Assistant Teacher role.
7. Behavioral Expectations

- Follows centre rules, SOPs, and child protection policies at all times.
- Communicates concerns or unusual situations promptly to the Class Teacher.
- Maintains professional boundaries with students and families.
- Does not accept gifts, money, or favors from families.
- Avoids exploiting relationships with families for personal gain.
- Seeks approval before engaging in outside work that may conflict with centre responsibilities.
- Demonstrates integrity, fairness, and ethical conduct at all times.
- Maintains consistent punctuality and attendance and provides timely notice in accordance with organizational leave and absence policies.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum secondary school education (SPM or equivalent).
- Intermediate proficiency in spoken and written English sufficient to communicate clearly with students, parents, and staff.
- Prior teaching experience is not required; experience working with children is an advantage.
- Able to support small groups of students and follow instructional direction consistently.
- Basic classroom management ability or willingness to develop such skills.
- Basic digital literacy or willingness to learn.
- Demonstrates punctuality, reliability, and consistent attendance.
- Able to follow instructions, accept feedback, and work cooperatively as part of a team.
- Willingness to comply fully with child protection, safeguarding, and professional standards requirements.
- Confirmation of employment is subject to satisfactory completion of probation, including demonstrated reliability, professional conduct, and role competency.
