Book Review Editors

Other Jobs To Apply

No other job posts for this day.

The Black Scholar is seeking applicants for two Book Review Editors.

The positions will start in mid-to-late 2025 and are for a two-year appointment, renewable by mutual consent.

As members of the TBS Editorial team, book review editors play a vital role in the publication process and the success of the journal. Editors will work collaboratively with their editorial colleagues to help achieve the journal’s mission by performing the following functions:

  • Secure eight to sixteen reviews and one review essay per year, to be published across four issues
  • Sign up for publisher catalogs and newsletters to source books in the relevant fields (history, humanities, literary/cultural studies, philosophy, psychology, social sciences, politics), and on occasion fiction, poetry, graphic novels, etc.
  • Secure book reviewers and contact publishers to request review copies be sent directly to reviewers
  • Keep track of reviews and reviewers, following up on late submissions when needed
  • Edit, reject, and accept reviews
  • Ensure that reviews adhere to the journal guidelines
  • Participate in meetings with other members of the TBS Editorial team and maintain active correspondence with editorial colleagues

Applicants must be able to work collaboratively and should have strong communication and organizational skills. They should also have clear institutional recognition and support for this voluntary activity for the duration of the two-year appointment.

While TBS works with and publishes content from authors, activists, and artists working outside of academia, applicants for the book review editor role must have a PhD (or master’s if this is the terminal degree in their field) and be associated with an academic institution. We welcome professors from all ranks and career stages from any field of study, including scholars working in the areas of trans, queer, gender, and disability studies. Moreover, applicants should have a working knowledge and understanding of interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary approaches to the study of Black Life, History, and Culture informed by the experiences and perspectives of people of African descent.

Applicants must be familiar with the journal’s mission, history, and publication record. Applicants should submit an email outlining why they’re interested, their qualifications for the role, and their C.V., including a list of publications, to Shannon Hanks-Mackey at hanks@theblackscholar.org no later than May 1, 2025. Please insert “Book Review Editor Position” in subject line.
